Recordati licenses a superstatin from Kowa
Milan, 11 October 2001
Recordati announced the signature of an important semi-exclusive licensing agreement with the Japanese company Kowa covering the sale in Italy of pitavastatin, a highly innovative drug for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia which is currently entering clinical phase III on a worldwide basis.
Pitavastatin is a "superstatin" with a remarkable capacity for reducing both the cholesterol fraction associated with high cardiovascular risk (LDL) as well as triglyceride levels, and at the same time increasing the "protective" fraction of cholesterol (HDL). Preliminary clinical data indicate that its high efficacy is associated with an excellent tolerability profile. Pitavastatin promises to become one of the best in its class which is growing rapidly in all industrialized countries.
In Italy, as in the rest of the industrialized world, hypercholesterolemia is quite a common condition and, ever more frequently, guidelines issued by competent authorities recommend adequate treatment in order to reduce morbidity and mortality resulting from cardiovascular events. Statins represent one of the most significant contributions to cardiovascular therapy. Abundant scientific literature supports the clinical benefit which derives from the use of this kind of drugs.
"Pitavastatin is a very innovative product which strengthens our presence in the Italian cardiovascular area creating synergies with Zanedip®, our proprietary antihypertensive and leading drug" declared Giovanni Recordati, Chairman and CEO. "Hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes and excessive bodyweight are the main cardiovascular risk factors. Recordati will therefore increasingly be a reference point in Italy for the treatment of conditions linked to this type of risk.
