Arrigo Recordati International Prize for Scientific Research awarded to Leonard A. Cobb, Peter J. Schwartz, Hein J.J. Wellens

The Prize was awarded to the three scientists for their contribution to the research in the field of Sudden Cardiac Death. Ischaemic Cardiomyopathy including Interventional Cardiology will be the theme of the 2007 Edition of the Arrigo Recordati Prize

Stockholm, September 4, 2005

Yesterday the 2005 edition of the Arrigo Recordati International Prize for Scientific Research ended with the € 100.000 Prize-giving to Leonard A. Cobb, MD, Hemeritus Professor, American College of Cardiology, Seattle WA, USA; Peter J. Schwartz, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Cardiology, Policlinico San Matteo IRCCS, Pavia, Italy and Hein J.J. Wellens, MD, Honoré Retired Professor, University of Maastricht; Director of Arrhythmology, Interventional Electrophysiology and Cardiology, University of Maastricht, Maastricht, The Netherlands. The Gala Ceremony took place in Stockholm during the European Society of Cardiology 2005 Congress.

The Arrigo Recordati International Prize for scientific research was established in 2000 in memory of the Italian pharmaceutical entrepreneur Arrigo Recordati who led the homonymous company through a period of intense growth and development for 48 years until his premature death in February 1999. The Prize recognizes an individual who has demonstrated, through dedication to research, the values recognized by Arrigo Recordati, by granting every two years a prize of 100,000 Euros to a distinguished scientist for his/her commitment and accomplishments in cardiology. Each edition is devoted to a specific theme in the cardiovascular therapeutic field.

The Judging panel decision of dividing the 2005 edition Prize between the three scientists was meant as a recognition for the outstanding value of their excellence in research on basic arrhythmogenic mechanisms and the improvement of both prevention and active therapy, both in Europe and in the United States.

The 2005 edition of the Prize was open to scientists of all nationalities who worked in institutional settings and were not affiliated with a pharmaceutical company. International societies and organizations specializing in the areas of cardiology, arrhythmology and internal medicine were invited to nominate candidates that they felt deserved the Lifetime Achievement Award in Sudden Cardiac Death. Self-nominations were not considered.

The Jury panel of the 2005 edition who yesterday announced the final decision is composed of three world-renowned experts in the fields of cardiology and Sudden Cardiac Death. The jury is chaired by A. John Camm, Professor of Clinical Cardiology, Chairman of the Division of Cardiac and Vascular Sciences, St. George's Hospital Medical School, London University, London, UK. The other two Members of the Jury are Kim M. Fox, Professor of Clinical Cardiology Imperial College, Director of Cardiology Royal Brompton Hospital and President-Elect European Society of Cardiology, London, U.K. and Michael R. Rosen, Gustavus A. Pfeiffer Professor of Pharmacology, Professor of Pediatrics, Director, Center for Molecular Therapeutics Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY, USA.

Professor Camm, on behalf of the Jury, officially awarded the winners with the following motivation: "The Recordati Prize recognizes Leonard A, Cobb, Peter J. Schwartz and Hein J.J. Wellens for their outstanding contribution to scientific discovery and clinical innovation in the field of Sudden Cardiac Death"

The winners, after expressing their satisfaction for the important award, gave a brief presentation aimed at summarizing their research findings in the field of Sudden Cardiac Death. Leonard A. Cobb with his 30 years of research dedicated to Sudden Cardiac Death, particularly focused his studies on improving management cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction and developing new techniques for their prevention. Peter J. Schwartz explained that his main area of research has always been Sudden Cardiac Death, including its pathophysiology, therapeutic approaches, and genetic mechanisms. Hein J.J. Wellens underlined his main contributions on modern clinical arrhythmology and cardiac electrophysiology. He furthermore developed a training program for physicians currently in use all over the world.

Finally, Giovanni Recordati, Arrigo Recordati's son and current Chairman and CEO of the Company, mentioning its company's continuous commitment to research, officially announced the theme of the next edition of the Prize. "Ischaemic cardiomyopathy, including interventional cardiology, is the theme chosen for the next edition of the Prize. The reason for such a choice is to underline the importance of coronary artery disease as the first cause of mortality and morbidity in the industrialized world, and highlight the significant contribution of interventional cardiology to the treatment of this disease.

From the physiopathological point of view, the underlying cause of coronary artery disease is the process of coronary atherosclerosis. Acute coronary syndromes are the most striking and relevant manifestation of coronary artery disease.

Atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries has a multifactorial origin, which is strongly related to genetics, inflammation, environment and diet, and to date, the exact mechanisms which contribute to this disease still remain unknown. "In consideration of the importance of ischaemic cardiopathy, we wish to contribute to the research, both basic and clinical and to the advancement of therapy in this area. It is particularly important to reward research which aims at understanding and preventing this cardiovascular disease but also the efforts in developing new interventional techniques allowing to treat the disease itself with both areas contributing to save thousands of lives"
