The fifth edition of the Arrigo Recordati International prize for Scientific Research issues the call for nominations

2009 Prize to award 100,000 Euros to a scientist for Innovation and Advances in Imaging Diagnostics in Heart Disease

Milan,  September 1, 2008

The Arrigo Recordati International Prize for Scientific Research has just announced the call for nominations for the fifth edition of the award.  The International Prize of 100,000 Euros is awarded every two years to a  distinguished scientist for his/her commitment and accomplishments in cardiology.  The fifth edition of the Prize in 2009 will recognize a clinical or basic science investigator who has achieved distinction in Innovation and Advances in Imaging Diagnostics in Heart Disease.

The international award was established in 2000 in memory of the Italian pharmaceutical entrepreneur Arrigo Recordati and aims to promote scientific research in the field of cardiovascular disease.

Arrigo Recordati, who passed away prematurely in 1999, strongly believed in the power of research to drive the development of the pharmaceutical industry and provide products beneficial to public health and individual well being.
”The Arrigo Recordati International Prize for Scientific Research was established   to carry on my father’s legacy and to inspire scientists and researchers to make important discoveries benefiting people worldwide” stated Giovanni Recordati, his eldest son and current chairman and CEO of Recordati.

Leading International Societies to Generate Nominees for the Prize
More than 200 international societies and organizations specializing in the areas of cardiology and internal medicine, are being invited to nominate candidates that they feel merit the award for Innovation and Advances in Imaging Diagnostics in Heart Disease. The Prize is open to scientists of all nationalities who work in institutional settings and are not affiliated with a pharmaceutical    company.    Nominations   may   only   be   submitted   by   an
international society or organization invited to nominate candidates and self-nominations will not be considered.  The deadline for nominations for the 2009 award is December 31, 2008.  The winner of the Prize will be announced during the ESH (European Society of Hypertension) Congress in Milan on Friday, June 12 2009.

World-Renowned Cardiologists to Select Winner
The 2009 Arrigo Recordati International Prize for Scientific Research Jury is composed of experts who have provided leadership throughout their long careers in the field of cardiology.
Chairman of the Jury is Robert O. Bonow (Goldberg Distinguished Professor, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Chief, Division of Cardiology; Co-Director, Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL, USA). Other Jury Members are: Jeroen J. Bax (Department of Cardiology, Leiden Unversity Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands) and Alessandro Distante (Cardiology Professor, University of  Pisa; ISBEM and IFC-CMR, Pisa, Brindisi e Lecce, Italia).

Cardiac Imaging
Our understanding and treatment of cardiac disease has paralleled and been underpinned by the development of cardiac imaging. The first attempts to image the heart was the electrocardiogram, first developed at the beginning of the 20th century. The understanding of cardiac arrhythmias led ultimately to electrophysiology and ablation techniques which are now carried out as routine procedures.
The electrocardiogram still remains the principal tool by which acute myocardial infarction is diagnosed and the effects of treatment evaluated. As technology has advanced, stress nuclear imaging and stress echocardiography has been shown to provide important additional information assessing patients with angina. Now much of this data can be obtained non invasively, however angiography still remains the best way to image the coronary arteries, as well as a necessary tool to perform coronary angioplasty.
Nowadays, echocardiography can image the heart in two and three dimensions to provide a clear picture of the anatomy as well as characterise heart muscle tissue and its function in real time; heart lesions can be accurately defined safely and quickly even in the tiniest of infants. Magnetic resonance is the latest imaging tool to be introduced to cardiology, providing additional information and allowing us to understand the anatomy, physiology and pathology in a way that has hitherto not been possible.
Nowadays, all these imaging techniques can be used to complement each other. The future knows no bounds as imaging on a molecular basis becomes not a dream but a reality.
